CDPR: Cyberpunk 2077 – Phantom Liberty Becomes the Final Project with RED Engine

It may not be considered the most optimal engine in the industry at the moment, but it still proves its worth as an engine capable of delivering fantastic visual presentations in certain projects. This impression seems to be the legacy left behind by CD Projekt Red’s proprietary engine – the RED Engine. As we know, the developer famous for games like The Witcher and Cyberpunk has already confirmed their transition to the Unreal Engine for some of their latest projects. It turns out, there is a high likelihood that the RED Engine will indeed be put to rest.

At least, that’s the signal coming from CD Projekt Red within the context of their financial reports. When asked how many copies of Phantom Liberty need to be sold for them to consider a second expansion for Cyberpunk 2077, CDPR emphasized that the decision wasn’t driven by profit concerns. Phantom Liberty will be the sole expansion for Cyberpunk 2077 due to the engine transition itself, not because of sales, profit, or satisfaction issues.

CDPR has confirmed that Phantom Liberty will be the last project in which they are involved with the RED Engine before they become occupied with the Unreal Engine in almost all of their upcoming projects, including the latest installment in The Witcher series. It is this engine-related issue that CDPR cites as the primary reason why Cyberpunk 2077 will only receive one expansion – Phantom Liberty.

Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty is scheduled for release on September 25, 2023, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and of course, PC. How about you? Will you miss the RED Engine?
