Fire at iPhone Factory in India: Impact on iPhone 15 Production

In a recent incident of significance, an iPhone manufacturing plant located in Chennai, India, owned by the Taiwanese manufacturing giant Pegatron, experienced a destructive fire. The fire occurred late on a Sunday night, according to local time.

Fortunately, Pegatron has reported that no injuries or fatalities resulted from the fire, and damage to their assets appears to be relatively minor. However, investigations into the exact cause of the fire are currently underway. As a safety precaution, Pegatron has advised its factory workers to halt operations temporarily, pending further instructions.

Presently, Pegatron’s India-based assembly facility is actively involved in producing both the iPhone 14 Series and the newly launched iPhone 15 Series, which was introduced just last week. The potential disruption to production due to this temporary work stoppage remains uncertain.

Pegatron has been a pivotal manufacturing partner for Apple in India since September of the preceding year, contributing significantly to around 10% of the total iPhone production in the country.

Furthermore, Pegatron is in ongoing discussions regarding the establishment of a second manufacturing facility, planned to be located in close proximity to their existing Chennai plant in India.

Notably, Apple has previously engaged other electronics manufacturers such as Wistron and Foxconn to assemble iPhones in India, a strategic decision aligned with the Indian government’s initiatives to bolster local manufacturing, thereby strengthening Apple’s presence and production capabilities in the nation.
