Google’s Tensor G4: An Underwhelming Upgrade

Google is currently in the early stages of developing its next-generation chipset, the Tensor G4. This chipset is destined for use in the forthcoming Pixel 9 Series smartphones, scheduled to debut in 2024. However, before that, Google has an immediate launch planned: the Pixel 8 Series, with a confirmed release date of October 4, 2023. It is widely speculated that these devices will be powered by the Tensor G3 chipset. While the Tensor G3’s exact performance remains a mystery as it hasn’t been officially released, there’s already buzz about its successor, the Tensor G4. Unfortunately, early indications suggest that the Tensor G4 won’t bring significant improvements over its predecessor.

The Collaborative Effort with Samsung System LSI

Google is reportedly collaborating with Samsung System LSI on the development of the Tensor G4. This new chipset will be based on the Exynos 2400 platform, while the Tensor G3 relies on the yet-to-be-released Exynos 2300 chipset. Interestingly, despite both being sourced from Samsung, it appears that there won’t be substantial differences between the two iterations.

Looking to the Future: 2025 Transition to TSMC

While Pixel devices may have a competitive edge in software features not commonly found in other Android phones, their hardware performance, particularly the Tensor chipset, is often seen as lagging behind. To address this, Google is planning a significant shift for its Pixel 10 Series in 2025. The company intends to transition production from Samsung to TSMC, a prominent semiconductor manufacturer. What’s even more noteworthy is that Google will take a different approach for the Tensor G5 chipset, constructing it entirely in-house, rather than building upon an existing Samsung Exynos foundation as was done in previous iterations. This strategic shift reflects Google’s commitment to improving the hardware performance of its Pixel devices moving forward.
