Meta, the parent company of Instagram, has taken decisive action against a significant sextortion network operating out of Nigeria. In a statement released on Wednesday, the company announced the removal of approximately 63,000 Instagram accounts linked to these illicit activities.
These accounts were actively involved in financial sextortion scams, targeting individuals with explicit threats and demands for money. Meta’s investigation revealed a coordinated effort, with a core group of around 20 individuals orchestrating the scheme through a network of approximately 2,500 accounts.
While the majority of victims were adult males residing in the United States, Meta also reported instances where minors were targeted. In these cases, the company has collaborated with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) to address the issue.
This crackdown on sextortion underscores Meta’s commitment to platform safety and user protection. By dismantling this extensive network, the company aims to disrupt a criminal enterprise that has caused significant harm to countless victims.
