Qualcomm Introduces Next-Generation MR/VR Headset Platforms: Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 and AR1 Gen 1

Qualcomm has just unveiled two groundbreaking headset platforms, the Snapdragon XR Gen 2 and AR1 Gen 1, signaling a significant leap forward in the world of mixed reality (MR) and virtual reality (VR). These platforms are designed to usher in a new era of MR and VR experiences with thinner, lighter devices, some of which no longer require external batteries.

The Snapdragon XR Gen 2 platform is a standout with its remarkable enhancements. Compared to its predecessor, it boasts a GPU performance that is 2.5 times more potent and a whopping eightfold increase in artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities.

This advanced platform can support up to 10 cameras and sensors, offers dual 3K displays, and incorporates the latest Spectra ISP technology. These features position it as the ideal choice for powering advanced MR and VR devices.

In contrast, the Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1 is tailored for lightweight smart glasses with MR capabilities. Beyond enabling users to effortlessly record and stream from these glasses, it excels in real-world visual searches and translations.

Both platforms are the result of a collaboration with Meta and are set to make their debut in Meta’s devices later this year. Notably, the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 platform will be the driving force behind the Meta Quest 3, while the Snapdragon AR1 platform will underpin the Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses.

Beyond the Meta ecosystem, other device manufacturers will soon have the opportunity to leverage these cutting-edge chips for their own devices. Devices featuring these platforms are expected to hit the market starting in 2024, ushering in a new era of immersive experiences.
