Sonic Team Leader Dreams of Creating a Sonic RPG Before Retiring

Discover Takashi Iizuka's dream of creating a Sonic RPG before retiring from SEGA. Will Sonic Team finally venture into the RPG genre?

The same franchise can bring a variety of different genres to life, with each adaptation finding its own unique success.

The quality and versatility of iconic characters like Mario, who boasts his own party and racing games, cannot be ignored. However, Sonic, Mario’s longtime rival since the classic console wars, is still striving to reach a similar level of genre flexibility. Despite Sonic’s continued presence in the gaming world, there’s one notable genre he’s yet to conquer – RPG.

It’s no surprise then that Takashi Iizuka, the current head of Sonic Team, is eager to develop a Sonic RPG. The only Sonic RPG released so far is “Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood” for the Nintendo DS, which was developed by Bioware, not Sonic Team.

In a recent interview with Good Vibes Gaming, Iizuka expressed his love for RPGs and his awareness that Sonic Team has never created a Sonic RPG in their 30-year history.

He admitted his confusion about why this has never happened and revealed his ambition to develop at least one Sonic RPG before retiring from SEGA.

However, he also clarified that this idea is still just a dream and hope, with no concrete plans in place yet.

The potential for an RPG set in Sonic’s universe is undoubtedly exciting and worth anticipating. Will Sonic Team eventually create a Sonic RPG in the future? We’ll have to wait and see.
