Spotify Aims to Make Lyrics Feature Exclusive for Premium Users

Spotify is reportedly planning to restrict access to its lyrics feature within their platform to premium users only. It seems to be one of Spotify’s strategies to attract more users into subscribing to their premium services. Several users have reported that the lyrics feature is locked and inaccessible for those who are not subscribed to Spotify Premium. A message stating “Enjoy lyrics on Spotify Premium” implies that the lyrics feature can only be enjoyed by Spotify Premium users.

In a statement to The Verge, Spotify confirmed this move. However, they emphasize that this change is currently in a “testing phase” and is only being rolled out to a limited number of users in certain regions. So, it’s not certain whether Spotify will implement this change, especially if it doesn’t receive a positive response from its user base.

More Free Users on Spotify:

In their latest report for the second quarter (Q2) of 2023, Spotify has experienced a significant increase in its monthly user count. While premium users have also grown in numbers, the majority of Spotify’s user base remains free users.

Free users with ads have seen a notable increase of 34 percent compared to the previous year, totaling 343 million users. Meanwhile, premium users have also grown by 17 percent, reaching 220 million users.

With this user composition, Spotify’s revenue still lags behind Apple Music, their biggest competitor in the music streaming industry. Therefore, it’s no surprise that Spotify is seeking ways to “persuade” its users to switch to premium. What are your thoughts on lyrics becoming a premium feature?
