Ubisoft Apologizes for Unauthorized Use of Flag in Assassin’s Creed Shadows

Ubisoft apologizes for using a historical Japanese flag without permission in Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Learn more about the controversy and the upcoming game release on November 15.

Despite its captivating gameplay and hype, Assassin’s Creed Shadows has left some fans, particularly Japanese gamers, disappointed due to its historical inaccuracies. The situation escalated when Ubisoft was found to have used a flag without permission from a Japanese organization.

Ubisoft has issued an apology for the unauthorized use of a Japanese historical re-enactment group’s flag in the concept art of Assassin’s Creed Shadows. The flag in question belongs to the Sekigahara Teppo-tai, an organization that re-enacts the historical Battle of Sekigahara, a pivotal event in Japan’s feudal history, which occurred on October 21, 1600.

Two pieces of concept art for Assassin’s Creed Shadows featured this flag, which also appeared in the physical artbook included in the Collector’s Edition. Consequently, Ubisoft Japan apologized for using the flag without permission, acknowledging the difficulty in removing the printed material already in circulation.

X/Twitter user @matchlock_kage, a member of Sekigahara Teppo-tai, was the first to notice and highlight the issue on social media, expressing uncertainty about how to respond. Some Japanese gamers have voiced their dissatisfaction, noting that only Ubisoft Japan has apologized, while Ubisoft’s main account has remained silent.
