Xiaomi’s Next Big Thing: A Smartphone with No Physical Buttons

Xiaomi is reportedly working on an innovative smartphone codenamed “Zhuque,” set to launch in the first half of 2025. This upcoming device will be notable for its complete absence of physical buttons, marking a significant departure from traditional smartphone designs.

Details about how Xiaomi plans to replace physical buttons remain limited. However, it’s speculated that the company might use gesture controls, voice commands, and pressure-sensitive sensors along the phone’s edges. This approach could offer a seamless and futuristic user experience with an entirely smooth exterior.

While the concept of a buttonless smartphone isn’t new—Meizu introduced the “Meizu Zero” in 2019, which also lacked physical buttons—the device struggled in the market and was eventually discontinued. Xiaomi’s “Zhuque” appears to be refining the idea, potentially addressing past shortcomings.

In addition to the absence of physical buttons, the “Zhuque” is rumored to feature an under-display front camera, eliminating the need for a visible selfie camera hole. This would result in a completely uninterrupted screen, enhancing both the aesthetic appeal and screen-to-body ratio.

Internally, the “Zhuque” is expected to be a flagship device, likely powered by the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 4 chipset—a more powerful version of the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 4. This would provide top-tier performance, catering to power users who seek exceptional speed and efficiency.

Though the “Zhuque” is still in early development stages, it raises questions about whether this buttonless and holeless design will become a trendsetter or remain a niche product. With Xiaomi’s reputation for innovation and market insight, the “Zhuque” could potentially succeed where others have struggled, setting the stage for future minimalist smartphones.
